Today's trends in kitchen design demand sleek stainless steel appliances that work with any decorating theme from contemporary to traditional. Stainless steel allows for the flexibility in design unequaled by other materials with almost limitless variations available. Many are incorporating this feature in their kitchen designs that extend beyond the appliances to include backsplashes, countertops, and even cabinet surfaces, pulling together a cohesive look that is ageless.

Stainless steel has been used in restaurants for decades throughout their professional kitchens. It offers more than a clean appearance, it is a cleaner material. Germs can thrive in tile grout and other porous surfaces, whereas this material offers no opportunistic medium for germ growth. It is durable, heat resistant, and easy to simply wipe away grease, spills, and splashes from cooking.

The look of stainless steel is no longer limited to a smooth, shiny surface. It can be fashioned in a wide variety of finishes and patterns for any kitchen application. It's the obvious choice for a polished, contemporary design but shouldn't be overlooked when a warm, classic design is desired. A matte finished harlequin design, for example, would be a fabulous background for a French Country kitchen or try a checkerboard design to tie together your mid-century kitchen favorites. It can be used throughout the kitchen or limited to certain spaces, such as behind the stove.

Though not inexpensive, using custom metal fabrication for this material can be an economic alternative to tile, usually costing around $20 per square foot to custom fabricate, plus the costs for professional installation. The cost of tile and installation can be significantly higher, depending on the tile chosen. Installation does require some expertise, so professional installation is recommended. Most stainless backsplashes can be installed without hardware, being glued to the prepared surface. It can be used directly over old tile, without the need to remove it, saving additional costs.

The biggest drawback of stainless kitchen backsplashes and surfaces is that it will scratch more easily than other materials. Patterned stainless surfaces are at better for hiding scratches and other blemishes that can occur. It can also stain from food acids and bleaches that are left on the surface for an extended time. This can be easily prevented with simply wiping it away with a wet cloth and drying.

Whatever you envision for your kitchen upgrade, remodel, or new construction, don't overlook the many advantages of stainless steel. Whether you incorporate a little or a lot, it will help to create that cohesive, designer look that is so in demand.
